DESCRIPTION: On Feb. 28, Chicago City Council’s Committee on House and Real Estate will hold a meeting at which they will consider approval of the sale of more than 100 parcels of city-owned land to Norfolk Southern for its expansion of its 47th Street rail yard.

This is likely the community’s only shot at influencing the City’s decision to sell the land.  We know that Norfolk Southern must acquire the City-owned parcels of land in order to complete the rail yard expansion so we want to demand that the City hear our concerns prior to transferring the property to the rail road for the expansion. This is the time when we have the most power to demand that the City include conditions limiting pollution and other environmental harms in return for the land transfer.

This is your chance to tell Norfolk Southern and the City of Chicago: Englewood deserves a fair deal!

DATE:
Thursday, February 28, 2013

TIME:
9:30 a.m.

PLACE:
Chicago City Hall / Richard J. Daley Center
50 W. Washington Street
2nd Floor — Hallway outside the City Council chambers

TRANSPORTATION:
We are organizing free bus transportation that will leave from Englewood at 8:45 a.m. Check back for details soon! (Or, you can just meet us there.)

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU GET THERE:
When you enter the Daley Center/City Hall, make sure to head to the side of the building that is for the city and not for Cook County. Take the elevator to the 2nd floor. When the elevators open, you’ll see us! We’ll be there with Sustainable Englewood banners, posters, t-shirts and more (first-come, first-serve) to make sure we have a visual presence at the meeting. There will probably be cameras there too. Several community members and leaders will speak in advance of the City Council Committee on House and Real Estate meeting.
